In order to raise awareness about E.coli 0157 Heather's Trust has produced literature in the form of leaflets, flyers, and posters to distribute wherever possible. Furthermore in order for the Trust to reach a truly diverse audience more unusual projects have been organised.

* Drama
In an attempt to raise awareness amongst children. Heather's Trust has begun organising a national drama project for the year 2001 that will help children protect themselves from dangerous bacteria such as E.coli 0157. By educating them in a fun and entertaining way children will be more aware of potential sources of contamination in the environment and the food they eat.

As you can imagine this is an enormous undertaking given that the Trust has only been in operation for a short period of time but we are determined that it will be successful. Even now, in the project's infancy, we have gained the support of The Theatre in Health Education Trust who are in the process of looking for funding but have also offered their services to help co-ordinate the project once it is up and running. Further support has also been given by The Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland as E.coli has been causing problems in Scotland for nearly 10 years and our project may provide an opportunity to provide something new to add to their existing resources.

If you are interested in the drama project for your school please contact the Trust (the address follows) and we will put you on our mailing list.

* The Internet
One of the recommendations from the inquest into Heather's death was a database for E.coli. From this recommendation Heather's Trust has set up its own web site. Professor Pennington is searching through his resources to find articles that would be suitable for this site. We also intend to publish outbreak reports on this site thereby ensuring that all clues to understanding this bacterium can be documented, and not lost as they are being at the moment. It is also planned to have a children's section on this web site that will link to the drama project to reinforce what the children have learned and provide teachers with resources so the project will be useful to those teaching the national curriculum.

* A Night Out
During each school term a local general knowledge quiz is organised by the trustees at Rednal Junior School in Birmingham. There are displays, leaflets and products, such as anti-bacterial liquids, cleaning fluids and no water hand washes on display to explain the sources of E.coli 0157 and how to prevent contamination. These evenings have proven to be very successful with nearly 100 people attending each quiz.

* Sport For All
As a charity we must remember the importance of fund raising and publicity. consequently we have organised a fun sports day on the 23rd July to be held at the University of Birmingham. We are hoping to attract all age groups and physical abilities to the event. The media have also expressed an interest in the event so it should be a very successful day for the Trust. The events we are planning to hold are:
* sponsored runs of different distances for those who like a challenge
* sponsored team events for families, for example, obstacle, relay and running races
* wacky races for those who want to dress up
* short races for those with disabilities
* chuck a bug and other silly throwing games for all age groups and abilities
* little fun races for toddlers and children such as egg and spoon, sack and three legged races
* friends of the Trust have also organised musicians, dancers jugglers and face painters to support the event.
It should be a fun packed afternoon for everyone. If you feel you would like to take part in the event please contact Heather's Trust for further details and a sponsorship form at juliepreen@aol.com or Heather's Trust, 42 Kendal Rise Road, Rednal, Birmingham. B45 9PX.
Even if you do not want to take part you are quite welcome to come along and watch.
